Christmas came early this year for my kids. I try to stick to holiday tradition but it not always the easiest or most convenient but for us, gingerbread houses are a must.
We usually get the pre-made box kit and use hot glue to hold it together (we don't eat them in our house). I decided to give the kids something whimsical to do and so we used Honey Maid graham crackers and some classic white frosting to put them together. I've seen them put together ahead of time or allow them to be made right before decorating. I can tell you with this experience, glue them ahead of time. They'll be sturdy enough for the kids to add some more frosting and not have to worry about it falling over. 
Go non-traditional too and use some things that are unexpected with your candies. Mix it up because it's all about making this a fun and memorable experience with the kids. 
I headed over to Wal-Mart and grabbed all my supplies. I stuck with the traditional Christmas color palate and let my daughter choose some fun candy of her own. I have these jars left over from my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle party that I got from TomKat Studio. Mini jars are a must for any party and any cooking just to make things a bit easier for the kids. 
As you can see, Freddie had a hard time with his staying together so naturally, he ate it. We invited some neighbors over to make them with us and they had so much fun. Siaki thought he had the best one and Leila just decorated her Santa. Siaki gets my OCD when it comes to making things just the way they're supposed to be rather than just letting things be how they turn out. As I've grown older, I've been able to let go of this but seeing him as a kid, I definitely see how I struggled with this growing up. 
Christmas is such a great time of year for children who believe. Freddie told me the other day that he knew I was Santa because of the wrapping paper but he just knows St. Nick is still real. I'm trying to be better about following traditions for my kids. I remember those were the things I loved so much when I was a kid that they need to have more consistency about it around the holidays.

My son and I made houses this weekend as well, but we used fruits and nuts because he doesn’t really care for candy too much. It’s so great that you let the kids just do what they wanted with their houses. [client]
