How do I upload an SVG file to my computer?

Uploading the SVG file to your computer is really easy. You’re going to want to click on the link above and then you’ll save the SVG file to your computer. Pay attention to where that file has saved. I like to save mine always to my desktop so that I know where I can easily find them. I move them to other folders after I’ve uploaded it into my Cricut or Silhouette software.

If you use an Apple system, your file will automatically unzip when you double-click on the folder. If you have a PC, you’re going to want to find a program that helps you unzip the file. You cannot upload zip folders into the Silhouette or Cricut software.

If you have a Cricut, follow these easy steps that Hey, Let’s Make Stuff shows or if you have a Silhouette, Persia Lou has a great tutorial.

It doesn’t need to be a shirt. I can make a Reverse Canvas, make my own Doormat, or even make some DIY tattoos with it!

My brother is a huge Star Wars fan and so this DIY Star Wars shirt is cool enough for him to wear or even my 13-year-old son to wear.

I’ve included both SVG and PNG formats of the files so you can trace it or upload it as an image, just whatever method you’re most comfortable using.

Mirror your image and cut and then weed away anything you don’t want on the shirt off of the carrier sheet.

Press your image according to package directions. For Siser EasyWeed or Cricut Everyday Iron-On, I use a temperature of 315 for 25-30 seconds.

Remove the carrier sheet while your image is still warm, turn it over and then press again for an additional 15 seconds. Celebrate May the Fourth by making your own DIY Jedi Shirt. Reverse Canvas to Celebrate International Women’s Day

January 30, 2019

I’m all about female empowerment and what better way to instill that in my daughter than making her this easy international Women’s Day reverse canvas.

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support.

Making an International Women’s Day craft was kind of a thinker for me. I want my daughter to know that woman can be strong and unapologetic at the same time.

I wanted to make her something that affirmed to her that she should know her worth at all times. Making reverse canvases are extremely low cost and they look great in the end.

To learn how to press different materials to your reverse canvas and what settings, click here.

I created this easy International Women’s Day SVG file so that you can make it all on your own to remind yourself, your mother or your daughter just how strong they are.

Supplies for your International Women’s Day Craft

Remove the backing of your canvas. I don’t even worry about removing the staples. It’s is too hard for me to do with my fibromyalgia. Just take a craft knife and cut on the outside of the staples.

Just leave the staples in your board. They won’t show and you can glue or staple over them. Paint the wood to how you want it to look. I chose a really light grey that I had used when I made this Buffalo Check Wrapping Paper.

To learn how to cut Iron-On (HTV), click here

Lay your canvas flat and apply your weeded image. Press for the recommended time. Because I am using foil iron-on, the setting is 285 for 30 seconds and peel away the carrier sheet once your image has cooled.

It’s not extremely important to get your image exactly how you want it on the canvas at this point. You want to get it centered but it doesn’t need to be exactly straight either.

With foil iron-on, the cooler the image is, the better your foil will look. Foil Iron-On tends to wrinkle when it is peeled away using the warm method. I like to at least allow 3 minutes before I even attempt it.

Lay your wooden frame and center your image before you begin to adhere it to the canvas. Hold both the frame and the canvas material together and flip it over.

Begin to staple the canvas material back onto the wooden frame. Start on one side and then work your way around, pulling taught.

Cut away any excess canvas material and then you’re done! It doesn’t need to be perfect on the back because, again, it won’t show.

This International Women’s Day craft is easy and it can be displayed year-round.

The Cutest Homemade Christmas Farmhouse Pillow and FREE SVG File

December 19, 2018

Having a farmhouse Christmas is something new in decorations that I am trying this year. Learn how easy it is to make your very own farmhouse pillow for Christmas and grab the free SVG file to make it on your Cricut, Silhouette or Brother.

This post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support.

I’ve changed up my Christmas decor to be more farmhouse by adding more felt banners, white snowflakes and just a more homey look all around. I love this Merry Everything pillow and I’m also contemplating if I should leave it up year round so I can say goodbye to the Debbie Downers.

Supplies for your Christmas Farmhouse Pillow

Upload your image into your design software. Cricut Design Space is extremely new user-friendly. Silhouette America’s software is a lot like Adobe Illustrator. Now that I’m becoming more familiar in Adobe Illustrator, it’s making me more confident in using Silhouette’s software.

You want to be sure to mirror your image before you cut. You’re going to not want to cut completely through the carrier sheet of your Iron On because it will hold your image together and have protection between your Iron On and the heating vessel.
If you’re going to adhere your HTV with an Iron, use these instructions here. If you’re going to use a Cricut EasyPress, use these settings available here.

Pay attention to the material you are pressing on. It always depends what material you’re pressing your image on and what type of Iron On Vinyl you’re using. A lot of the shinier, metallic HTV requires a cold peel method which some people say to wait 30 minutes to be safe. This will prevent your HTV from wrinkling.

For the most part, most HTV is warm peel so after you’ve pressed your image, remove the carrier sheet right after. Be careful not to burn yourself. It’s helpful to have a pair of tweezers on hand when you’re going to be using this method

How do I keep my Iron On Vinyl from lifting after washing them?

After you’ve pressed your image, be sure to wash your items inside out and on a gentle cycle to prevent the HTV from lifting. Hang dry your Christmas farmhouse pillow to make it last longer. Care is just as important as the application so follow all of the manufacturer’s recommendations.

There are a few things to know before you make your custom doormat and I’ve compiled some of my favorite tips and tricks to achieve crisp lines, reduce bleeding from your paints and how to save you time.

Supplies for your DIY custom doormat

or

A few weeks ago I made this Hocus Pocus Spell Book Doormat and I learned a lot of things you shouldn’t do while making a personalized doormat.

Don’t use stencil vinyl. It will not stick to the fibers in these types of doormats. You want to use something that you’ll be able to get a good adhesion while also allowing crisp lines when you’re painting your doormat.

What should I use when painting a doormat?

You want to use some freezer paper. I linked to my favorite above and it fits perfectly in a Cricut or Silhouette. This Happy Holidays SVG file can be uploaded to any electronic cutting software. I don’t know much about the Brother ScanNCut but I do know that you will have to have the designer edition of Silhouettes software which is an extra expense.

To upload a photo or SVG file into Cricut Design Space is free. It’s a pretty simple thing to do. I like uploading SVG files better than PNG or JPEG files because everything is done for me and I don’t need to do any additional edits. To see how to upload an image into Design Space, click here.

How do I make stencils with freezer paper?

You can use an x-acto knife when cutting freezer paper or an electronic cutter. To make a stencil with your freezer paper, lay your printed image on a cutting mat and then lay the freezer paper shiny-side down on top. Cut your freezer paper over the image and you’ve made a stencil.

To cut freezer paper with your Cricut or Silhouette, lay your freezer paper shiny-side facing down on the cutting mat. Cut it as you would regular vinyl and then weed the image while it is still on the mat.

How do I iron freezer paper?

Lay your image on your surface shiny-side down and use the cotton setting on your iron with no steam. You want to press well so that you have no lifting on any of your pieces so that the ink doesn’t bleed through.

Any middle areas of letters just place them where they should go and press again with your iron.

Use some appropriate ink and use a foam stippling brush to put your ink on the areas. If you’re using fabric ink or regular acrylic craft ink, pay attention to the instructions on how to use them.

To stencil, you want to have a plate of your ink and then an open area so that you can blot off the excess ink. When stenciling, the less the better. You’d want to have to paint more than getting a blob of paint and risk bleeding.

How long should I wait before removing freezer paper?

Allow your ink to dry completely before peeling your freezer paper off your custom doormat. I like to wait at least fifteen minutes if I’m using acrylic paint. If you use fabric paint, wait 30 minutes and then set it again with the iron.

The same technique can be used on t-shirts but you will need to use fabric paint for that.

That’s it! That is how easy it is to make your own custom doormat. It’s inexpensive and you can make it match any holiday.

New Year, Same Mess & More FREE SVG Files for New Years

December 4, 2018

Ring in the New Year but also don’t forget that you’re still a complete mess! Grab this and many other free SVG files for your next handmade New Years shirt.

This post contains affiliate links thank you for your support.

Celebrating New Years is always something I look forward to. My husband is from Tonga and they’re right on the International Dateline so they’re the very first ones to celebrate the New Year.

We ring in New Years in Tonga at our local church meetinghouse. We grab lots of balloons and string and have the most fun time dancing around the sports court.  No lie, it’s one of the most fun nights we have on the island. Here is our Christmas tree that we have in Tonga and we had a craft night where all the kids cut paper snowflakes and we blew up more balloons for the tree. I remember my husband telling me that some Christmases all they got were balloons and they were so excited. Here is the family a few years back on our trip. We try to go to Tonga every few years but it’s getting expensive since we all require seats on the plane. It’s definitely a humbling experience going there and I tell you all about our trip to Tonga in this post.

But enough about Christmas lets talk about New Years and how you can get 12 free New Year SVG files!

Like I said above, New Years is always a fun time of year for us. But believe me, when I say, I’m the same mess that I was in 2017. I can’t get my act together so this New Year, Same Mess SVG file is perfect in describing me.

Supplies for your New Years shirt

Click on the link above to the free SVG file and save it to your computer. You’ll then upload it into your electronic software. To upload an SVG file into Cricut Design Space, follow these instructions. To upload an SVG file into your Silhouette software, Persia Lou has a great step-by-step tutorial on how to do that.

Next, cut your free New Years SVG file with your electronic cutter. Remember to mirror your image so that it cuts properly. I prefer using my Cricut and that’s just because I’m used to it. I haven’t used a Silhouette in a few years but they cut the iron-on vinyl just as good.

After you’ve unloaded your vinyl from the cutter, you want to remove any of the images that you do not want to go on your New Years shirt. Use a weeding tool or a safety pin and take off the vinyl. You now have your entire New Year, Same Mess image still attached to the carrier sheet.

Being by preheating your fabric to the suggested settings. Lay your iron-on vinyl on top of the shirt and then press for the recommended amount of time. Turn the shirt over and press again. Depending on what material of HTV you use, you want to check if it is a warm peel or cool peel.

Use this handy Iron-On Vinyl Guide to know what setting you should be using with your HTV.

What does it mean to cool peel or warm peel heat transfer vinyl?

It’s simple, cool peel means to allow your HTV to come back down to room temperature before you peel off the carrier sheet. Warm peel means to pull the carrier sheet off of your material while it is still hot.

A lot of foil iron on is cold peel. You want to allow it to cool down so that your foil HTV doesn’t wrinkle. You’ll have to use a little bit of force to take the carrier sheet off of the cool HTV but it won’t peel off your shirt.

What if I don’t want a workout shirt?

Easy, put this on any shirt you own to let your friends, family, and strangers know you are one hot mess! It looks super cute on this baseball shirt and quite frankly, you can wear it all year round.

You can use these free SVG files on anything. Make yourself a mug like I did last month with our Christmas SVG file hop. Follow the links below to grab your own and make whatever your heart desires.

Now for your other FREE SVG files, just click on the link and you’ll be taken to the blogs to download their own files.

Malakai has been all over the place lately. I often wonder how I ever did parenting with three kids, not in school and my house was clean. I blame the cleanliness on one thing – we have too much crap laying around here. While cleaning out drawers of old clothes I came upon this red baseball tee. I figured it was perfect to make Malakai a cute Christmas alphabet shirt with this free Christmas SVG file.

So now that Malakai is in preschool, he’s starting to learn his letters. I made these letters in the shape of a tree to bring in more excitement for Christmas.

This free Christmas SVG file doesn’t need to be used for a toddler shirt. Place it on a wood plank or even a shirt for you.
