Frozen 2 hits theaters this week and I cannot wait! Create these Disney Frozen Cupcakes that are inspired by Elsa's frosty white hair. Learn the step-by-step process of how to create these for yourself.
When Elsa is singing on the mountain top and her dress changes to that beautiful icy blue, it's a pivotal moment in movie history. She's a strong woman, doesn't need anyone by her side, and is learning to love herself. Elsa is a great role model for any young girl and so having these Frozen Cupcakes at their party is the perfect treat.
Supplies Needed for your Frozen Cupcakes
- 12 cooked & cooled Vanilla Cupcakes
- White Candy Melts
- White and Ice Blue Fondant
- Circle Cookie Cutter
- Quilted Fondant Embossing Roller & Holder
Store-bought cake mix has saved my bacon too many times. There are ways that you can easily adapt the box mix to have your cupcakes more fluffy or taste a little bit more homemade. Good vanilla, as Ina would say, is a perfect ingredient to add to your store-bought cupcake mix.
Make your buttercream extra smooth by sifting your confectionary sugar beforehand. Getting the butter extra creamy and almost white before you add in your sugar can also drastically affect the taste of your buttercream in a good way.
When mixing your butter, you want to use unsalted butter and have it still be a bit cold. If you can press your finger into the side easily and it's still cold, that's perfect!
Be sure that your vanilla cupcakes are cooled to the touch before you start icing them. Use as much frosting as you like here. Most kids will pull the fondant off because it can be pretty sweet so just keep that in mind.
Create your White Chocolate Snowflakes
Melt your Candy Melts and then place them into a piping bag or Ziploc bag with the corner clipped. Line a baking sheet with parchment and then create stars and add little notches on each ends to create the snowflakes.
Set them aside and allow them to cool before taking them off. Use a toothpick to pull them off instead of having to touch them with your hands and melting the candy melts. You'll also use that same chocolate to place a dot on the intersecting areas so that it'll stick onto your quilted fondant topper.
Create the Quilted Fondant Cupcake Toppers
Use a smooth surface to roll out your fondant. I like the taste of Satin Ice Fondant or you can make your very own Marshmallow Fondant that's really easy. Use cornstarch or powdered sugar to prevent sticking and keep it moving so that it doesn't stick in any places on your board.
You'll mix the blue and white fondant together to create the right hue of blue. After you've rolled it out, use your fondant embossing tool and roll it across the top but not applying too much pressure.
Use your circular cookie cutter and cut out 12 rounds for the tops of your cupcakes. Place those over the top of your frosted cupcakes and set aside.
How to Make Elsa's Fondant Braid
To make Elsa's braid, you're going to use three small balls of the white fondant and then roll them into three long strands.
Create your braid using a standard braiding technique, don't ask me to explain it because I cannot do it in words, lol.
how to assemble your Disney frozen cupcakes
Wrap the braid on the edge and then cut off each end of the braid so that it matches up with your blue cupcake topper.
Place your chocolate snowflakes on the center of your cupcakes and serve.
Frozen Cupcakes
Equipment
- 1 circular cookie cutter, about 2.5 inches in diameter
- Fondant embosser
Ingredients
- One dozen vanilla cupcakes
- ¼ cup butter softened
- 1 cup icing sugar
- 1-2 tbsp milk
- 1 cup white candy melts
- 5-6 oz. baby blue fondant you can take 4-5 oz. white fondant and add 2 small drops of blue gel food coloring to achieve the right shade
- 2-3 oz. white fondant
Instructions
- Before decorating these cupcakes, ensure that they’re completely cool to the touch.
- In a large bowl, use an electric mixer and beat together butter, icing sugar and milk. These ingredients make up the buttercream.
- Start the electric mixer on low and gradually increase to high. Once all the ingredients are well-combined and form semi-stiff peaks, the buttercream is done.
- Use an offset spatula to frost each cupcake.
- Roll the baby blue fondant so that it’s about ¼ of an inch thick.
- Use the fondant embosser to give the blue fondant a quilted look.
- Using the circular cookie cutter, cut out 12 fondant circles from the baby blue fondant.
- Press one blue fondant circle on each cupcake.
- Line a baking sheet with wax paper.
- Place white candy melts into a bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals until completely melted, stirring between each interval.
- Scoop the melted candy into a piping bag and pipe out snowflakes on the lined baking sheet.
- To achieve the snowflake candy, start by piping out a one-inch line. Follow the line with an “X.”
- Pipe out two dots on either side of the candy lines.
