Year of the Dog Pennant

My niece and nephews are in a Chinese language immersion program at their local schools. My kids take the French program at ours. I think that bringing in new cultures to our own is so important.

I love celebrating the Chinese New Year because its a start to new and a way to honor the old traditions. Some of my favorite Chinese New Year traditions are gifting money in red envelopes, wearing your traditional Chinese clothing and honoring your ancestors. For this Year of the Dog pennant, I cut it on my Cricut Maker and ironed it on with my EasyPress or you can use your standard home iron. To use your iron, use these tips here.

how to remove the carrier sheet from iron on vinyl
how to make a felt pennant

Cut your file and be sure that your image is selected to mirrored. You'll want to place your iron-on vinyl shiny side down on your mat. Select the iron-on setting and cut. With iron-on vinyl, you do not want to cut through the carrier sheet. You'll pull off the negative areas, leaving your image on the carrier sheet.

Set your EasyPress to 305° and allow it to warm up. Warm your surface for about 10 seconds and place your image onto your pennant. Press for 30 seconds on the front, turn it over and press for an additional 15 seconds.

When using your EasyPress, you want to press on a firm surface. I use a wooden surface with a towel folded on top. You want the towel so that you have a bit of give and the crevices of your material will be warmed and glued. If you find your EasyPress losing temperature while your pressing, it is because the surface underneath is pulling the heat. Pressing pillows are great for this purpose too.

Thread your dowel through the cut holes and then tie a ribbon on the ends to hang your Year of the Dog pennant.
