Being Brave and Being Fat

April 28, 2017

I did receive this shirt from Cents of Style as part of compensation for this post. All opinions are my own and this post does include affiliate links.

What is being brave? I don’t know if I have one answer for that. Being brave to me is trying something you’ve been afraid to do. You finally have that exhilaration that you’ve experienced something you never thought you’d try or would have to face. Being brave to me has different meanings in different situations. DSC_6762One thing I’ve struggled with my entire life is my weight. I’m finally past all the issues of what others think of me but I’ve had a hard time getting over the things that I think of myself. I’m extremely critical of myself and I hate that I physically cannot do things I want to do. If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a few weeks ago that I posted on getting stomach surgery to help with weight-loss. Being brave has helped me face that I need intervention to help myself.Cents-Of-Style-Be-Brave-gray-graphic-tee_web_grandeSome may see that this is an easy way out but it’s far from easy. In 2006 I had a lap-band placed on the top of my stomach to help restrict the amount I eat. The last ten years I have figured out ways to manipulate it so that I can eat more than what I am supposed to. In that it has led me to bulimic tendencies because I’ve been too afraid to face the truth and food has always comforted me.

I’ve learned that throughout this process I have to face real life and I cannot hide behind food anymore. I think the reason the lap-band didn’t work for me is because I hadn’t faced real life. Now I am more than ready. I’ve had physiological help within the last year to help me deal with the issues of overeating. I’ve faced my own issues of suffering from Post-Partum Depression and PTSD. I’ve faced the fact that if I don’t do something drastic now then I never will.DSC_6850I’ve had a very low quality of life these last few years since I had my baby and I don’t want to do it anymore. That’s why I’ve chosen to be brave and to have a gastric bypass on May 22. I’ll detail my progress on Instagram but I also want others to know that it’s OK to be vulnerable and it’s OK to face what we’ve all been hiding from. It’s now time to be brave, it’s time for me to just be me.

I love Cents of Style for so many reasons but one of the biggest reasons is that they’re a champion of others and support others to no end. I hope that you get a shirt to help remind you of what you can do and what you can accomplish!DSC_6741I also wish I got better pictures of my shirt but it was a reminder for me under my button up to continue to be brave. I basically folded my arms the entire time because I wasn’t being brave this day. And we’ve also aged because most of our conversation included who is nice and at what store we’re willing to revisit because they had great customer service…I do love my friends though!

Make your own Yoga Mat carrier and how to deal with Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a rough disease to deal with. Find out how I help combat my symptoms and learn how to make this DIY Yoga Mat Carrier.DIY Yoga Mat Carrier for effective ExerciseThis post contains affiliate links. Thank you for your support. The best exercise for fibromyalgia

I’ve had Fibromyalgia for six years now. It first occurred when I was pregnant with my daughter and we flew home from a visit to Tonga in 2009. I just kept having this terrible back pain that would not go away no matter what I did. When I was first diagnosed I had no idea how to react or how to even deal with this disease. There have been things over the years that have helped ease the symptoms but nothing has been more effective than exercising.exercise and fibromyalgiaPain relief is not an easy thing to come by with Fibromyalgia but with the right kind of medications and the right kind of exercise, life can be made a little easier. The hardest part for me to deal with is that I look 100% on the outside but on the inside it feels like my body is on fire. The smallest thing can set my body into a full flare and the weather is usually what does it. Living in Utah has had many ups but the ever-changing weather pattern is not one of them.

One of the best things I’ve found that helps me with my Fibromyalgia is yoga. It’s a light exercise and doesn’t use all my energy for the day. For me, when I exercise, I cannot do a vigorous workout. I have to slowly move and slowly add time to my workouts. I can’t just go all in at full speed for an hour. For me it’s been about a gradual pace and being able to feel successful rather than throw all my eggs into one basket and feel crummy later. DIY Yoga MatWith yoga, you need a mat – and with a mat, you need a carrier. I’m going to show you how to make your own yoga mat carrier.

Supplies:

  • 2 coordinating fabrics at 1/4 yd each
  • sewing machine
  • thread
  • pins or sewing clips

Yoga Mat Carrier DIYI already had this fabric on hand and they were already cut to 2.5″ width so I just sewed them together to make longer strips and then sewed them again down the middle to create a 5″ wide strip. I just used the length of the fabric as a starter and then later cut it down to what length I wanted my yoga mat carrier to be. The length of your yoga mat carrier is completely up to you. The loops will be around 8″ round so just take that into consideration. How to press seams when sewingI like to press my seams to one side when ironing my fabric. I don’t like to have them open because I think it leaves a noticeable gap so I try to keep all my seams facing one direction.DIY Yoga Mat CarrierNext you’ll pin or clip the ends of the fabric to they meet in the middle, give it a good press and sandwich them together again to create one long strip. Pin or clip on one side so that you can start sewing on the opposite side to hold together your yoga mat carrier. How to use sewing clipsSew along both edges to secure them in place. How to make your own yoga mat carrierNext is the tricky part. I’m going to do my best to explain but it can be a little complicated. Go ahead and lay out your strip of fabric in one long piece. Take one end and begin pulling it up and then go down placing the end piece below the longer strip. It’ll and up looking like a sideways 4. Take the end of the piece and fold over a hem and clip your fabric above the strip. This ends up forming a loop that the yoga mat can slide in and out of.how to sew cottonhow to make your own yoga matSew a reinforced square over the area that you clipped and repeat these steps for the next side. Once both sides are sewn, your ready to place your yoga mat in there and head off to the gym.yoga mat carrierI’ve talked a lot about finding the balance in Fibromyalgia with exercise and medicine. An effective medicine that I have found is Curamin® Stop Pain Now and is available at fine health food stores nationwide. Check out the store locator to find a retailer near you or purchase it here. It is safe, effective and non-addictive which is important in finding a medication that’ll help you combat chronic pain. Chronic pain isn’t something that is solved overnight and it’s not something most people can understand unless they’ve been experiencing the same thing. Curamin® doesn’t just mask pain, it gets to the source and stops it.For me, finding balance was the hardest part of Fibromyalgia. There are so many great resources to help you find what helps others but it’s also important to find out what works for you. I’m able to exercise continually because I have learned when my body has had enough and I’ve had a lot of trial and error with multiple medications. Natural is always best in my book but you know your body best and you know what it needs. Find a great doctor that will listen to your concerns and if you feel like you’re not being heard – chances are, you’re not.

I’d love to help you more in your chronic pain. What are some questions you have for me?

Marking off my New Years Resolutions by keeping up with my Calendar

Call me crazy but that is so me! My mom tells me all the time – Poodle, you need to make a list everyday of what needs to be accomplished and it will make your life so much easier. I know it would but I don’t and I continue to run around with my head cut off. Yes, my mom calls me Poodle cause I shake my fanny when I walk. TMI. Now, that’s why I headed off to Walmart to find out what their lowest priced unlimited plans were and I’ll tell you why…

Walmart DisplayKeeping a New Years Resolution with Walmarts Unlimited Talk, Text and 3G Mobile Plan by T-Mobile. #HAppyNewMeMy parents were so kind and got the kids a new computer for Christmas because they’re going to need one for homework assignments and our old MacBook is hanging by its last thread. I knew I needed to have an electronic device that is going to sync with the calendar since it’s a Windows operating system but I didn’t want to be paying an arm and a leg for its service. Walmart offers the lowest price unlimited plans for $34.88 and you get 5GB of data of T-Mobiles 3G Network. I grabbed their Samsung Galaxy Exhibit for $79.88 and a starter kit for $25. They’ve got other options but I was going for calendar quality here and that was it since I also have an iPhone. Keeping a New Years Resolution with Walmarts Unlimited Talk, Text and 3G Mobile Plan by T-Mobile. #HAppyNewMeNow when I have a project, I make sure that I write it down in my Erin Condren planner and that I write in down in my new Samsung phone so that I can have it automatically sync to our family’s new computer and that way I have it written down at least three times. Keeping a New Years Resolution with Walmarts Unlimited Talk, Text and 3G Mobile Plan by T-Mobile. #HAppyNewMeMy new years resolution is to be more organized this year and to be able to get my act together to share with you guys a lot more DIY projects. See that red wall in the back, it’s going to be BLACK and the frames behind the desk wall are getting a makeover! Those DIY projects take a ton of planning and so I need this in my life to be able to be organized and be in the know! I meant be in the know because I need to know all what is going on around me and I’ve been putting other things in front of my priorities and that needs to also change. Keeping a New Years Resolution with Walmarts Unlimited Talk, Text and 3G Mobile Plan by T-Mobile. #HAppyNewMeSo for 2015 I am going to be organized and in the present and in the know! What’s your New Years Resolutions? I’d love to hear them, share with me down below!

About My Life

I am Brave and Beautiful

September 29, 2014

I am so proud to be participating in this project. I was a little hesitant at first just like anyone would be posting pictures of your non glorious self all over the Internet! However, I was really pleased with how this project turned out. I’m proud of the woman I’ve become. I’m proud of the challenges I’ve faced and that I’ve endured because I know that it has contributed to my beauty. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the beholder is you!

I am Brave and Beautiful – a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe. Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called TRY. My blogging friend Megan of Brassy Apple wanted to push this movement along and invited women from all over to share what they looked like without make up and I joined in!! Colbie’s song says, “Take your make up off. Let your hair down… Look into the mirror at yourself, Do you like you? Cause I like you… “

Megan and her friend Cobi of Peacefrom6pieces have been the team behind this whole project. Their worldwide vision included creating their own video inspired by the song TRY. The talent of Robbins Creative made it possible for them to pull it off. You have to click play and see the beauty and bravery displayed and you might even recognize a few faces in there.

Me along with 101+ other blogging women from different backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes have decided to be Brave and Beautiful! You can join in this movement too by sharing what you look like without makeup on. You don’t need a blog either! Just tag your photo with #IamBraveAndBeautiful on Instgram and search the hashtag to see who else has joined in. ALSO, if you tag it with a second hashtag – #ColbieTRY we just might be able to get Colbie Caillat’s attention since she was the inspiration behind it all!

Are you brave and beautiful? I am, here I go!

I am Brave and I am Beautiful on seelindsay.com

I am brave and I am beautiful. We all submitted photos of us in makeup and then the challenge is for us to post photos of us with no makeup. This is supposed to empower me? In a way I feel more empowered in the full makeup shot because most days I look like the no makeup shot. I hardly ever wear makeup except for special occasions or if I’m feeling like 1000% awesome (that’s not very often).

I am Brave and I am Beautiful on seelindsay.comFor me to feel awesome takes a lot because of my Fibromyalgia. First thing in the morning I have to make sure and get my medicine in me or by noon I will feel like a stiff board, I won’t be able to function and it will affect me for 2 days. I have to remember my meds at night to. Ugh, medicine…it makes me feel ugly, old, just plain unhealthy which is what I am. I am completely unhealthy. While I know that I cannot be cured of Fibromyalgia, I can for sure do more things to bring calm some of the symptoms.

Ever since blogging, there has been a complete turn around in my life. I’m going places, doing things and pushing myself. I feel like I have myself back, I feel good and when I feel good – that is when I feel beautiful. It’s not the makeup that I need, though it does help boost some ego I’ve got in me that comes up once in a while. When I’m feeling healthy, I can accomplish anything and do everything and I feel I have nothing holding me back.

To me being beautiful has nothing to do with looks. I always tell my husband that fat people need love too. When my son tells me about girls who have crushes on them and they don’t like them back – I always say to treat them always with respect and to never be rude even though you may not think they are pretty on the outside, they may be pretty on the inside. If we just only look at the exterior of people, we will never know the true beauty or ugliness of them. Always give people a chance, always look for the good, always be someones friend. It’s the least someone deserves and to me that is what being Brave and Beautiful is, not a face with makeup.

I am Brave and I am Beautiful on seelindsay.com

For me, I know that I can live in confidence that I am beautiful because I live in a supportive environment with a husband who tells me that, and that is important. But, the most important part is that you know it for yourself because there will be days that you’re not told or reminded and you have to tell it to yourself. You have to know that your heart is beautiful and that it’s not always what’s on the exterior that counts. For some people that is what only matters to them and it’s something to work past. When you have confidence then you don’t need to worry about it.

A good sense of humor also helps a lot too. I love joking about my curves. I know I don’t have a bangin’ body and I don’t ever expect to. If I look at my Mother and Grandmothers, I do not stand a chance, ever! My kids told me that the back of my knees look like butts and that I have melting boobs. Seriously kids, I’d love to hear what you have to say about it when you’re older and figure out that one of you made my body look that way. They also love to separate my belly roll to find my belly button. It’s just life and I’m not embarrassed, I really think it’s quite funny. They think it’s funny. It’s a way that they can learn every body is different and everyone has different body types.

I hope that you’re able to learn something from my beauty post and really learn what your true beauty is and love yourself. In the end, maybe you feel this is selfish, but your opinion of yourself is the only one that matters. It is not selfish, it’s the truth. I will have to say at the end of writing this I feel very empowered and I love that we were challenged to write these posts and take those pictures!

Thanks so much for stopping by! XOXO,

Lindsay

About My Life - Scrapbooking and Stamping

Call me a blogger! Oh, and a Little Heidi Swapp too!

March 26, 2014

I can now be officially called a blogger! I’m excited to take this new step in my life, but also a little nervous. I’ve been taking small steps out of my comfort zone for a few years now, and now is the time I take it public. I thrive on creativity. I get inspiration from others. I want to see others succeed and bloom into who they are truly meant to be and hopefully, this is a way that I can do it. My life didn’t start so creative, I had a mom, aunts, grandmas, and friends all guide me. Now we have PinterestFacebook and Instagram. We all feed on these and it’s so easy to follow and create off each other.
I’ve decided to start my first post to talk about how I fell out of my creativeness when I had my first son. I wasn’t looking to add more stress to my life, I thought. Creativity for me is a release. A way that I relax, a way to block out the rest of the world. While I know getting these supplies can be expensive, I want to try and use what I have and up-cycle.
I used a wooden Heidi Swapp frame that I had around the house and sprayed it with Blush color shine. It sat on the frame for a good 5 minutes to absorb all that shine.
Next, I took 2 stencils, my butterfly from the Hello Today collection and the 6×6 polka dot. I took white acrylic paint and a cosmetic wedge and pounced in random areas to create a background.
I took those same stencils and layered them over the butterfly individually, then placed them on white Bazzil cardstock. For the scallop stencil, I used the gold color shine and for the polka dots, I used the seafoam color shine. I then cut them out so they looked like personal punched out butterflies (super gorgeous). I then stapled them together, added a large background stamp and pulled up their wings to add dimension. Heidi did a segment on My Craft Channel for this technique if you’d like to watch.
I started to assemble my frame piece by piece. I added some stamping on the background from her Hello Today collection available at Michaels. I found in my stash some Maggie Holmes ephemera and added the tag behind my butterfly. I sprayed some polyester ribbon with some mint color shine and with my tiny attacher, stapled it to the center of the butterfly. I then added some pins to pierce the middle of the butterfly and added a pearl to add a feminine touch. On the left side, I added some more of Heidi’s acrylic letters and spelt “bloom” to mark the season. I folded some papers and ran them through my Xyron and stuck them to the paper. I bought a Martha Stewart crafters clay kit a while ago and made this cute mini frame. I figured it matched and let’s add it. More is more and I like that!
heidi swapp spring frame
I then added some banners, again from the Hello Today collection, to the right corner. I built up quite a few layers of these wanting a big, bold look. I found these laser cut wood butterflies at Michaels and sprayed them with seafoam and mint color shine. Once that was on there I took my gold color shine and just halfway pumped the bottle and it leaves these big splashes of gold on the project which I just love.

I love how this frame turned out and I love how I got my groove back! Who else didn’t love watching that movie with Taye Diggs in all his glory? Ha! Life has been good to me lately and I can only see it going up from here. I hope to see you back here more often. I’ve got a lot of things to share and it’s part of me, all of me.
