Christmas is by far my favorite holiday. I love putting up all the decorations and being around everything festive! When I grew up, my mom had me pass out the Halloween candy and decorate the tree at the same time. We were that family who couldn't get it up soon enough. I just don't have Thanksgiving decorations and I don't really like those brown colors so it works out, lol. I do like the holiday of Thanksgiving though so don't get me wrong here..
My tree has had these same decorations for the last 7 years. Even though they are 7 years old, they still are timeless. I really love how they aren't overbearing and blend well with the tree. I have a 7-ft. tree and it's a slim tree. There isn't a ton of room in our home so the skinniness works great. Make sure that you choose a tree that fits with the scale of your room. If you're working with a giant tree in a small room, it will be extremely overbearing and vice versa.
When you string lights on a tree, you want to be sure and wind them around each branch. Get deep into the tree and make sure that the wires are tight. I'm used to artificial trees so a real tree would be a little harder. Next, you'll want to lay out all your filigree and work from larger to smaller. With mine I have the rods bent so that I can stick them into the middle of the tree, have a piece laying on a branch and some sticking out of the tree. I then add my flowers - I mix and match between the green and the red and try to make sure I have enough spacing between them.
I then add my pomegranates - when you're adding ornaments, instead of just hanging the ornaments, I wind the ribbon around the branch to get a good, sturdy hold to keep it in place. I then did the same with my velvet ornaments.
The last thing I do is clip on my birds. Each year my mom gets the kids an ornament so they add these to the tree. If you've read my previous post, I have a compulsive problem with allowing my kids to add to crafts or any kind of decorating. I don't mind it so much this year. We need a change. My tree skirt is from Pottery Barn a few years back and it ties in perfectly. I really like to use tablecloths as well for skirts and bunch them up. Because my tree is skinny, I bunch mine up and I like the dimension it gives.
The key to all of it is stay within the color palette, add lots of textures and be consistent. Don't just have one of something. When you invest in a new tree and new ornaments you want to make sure that you're going to love it for years to come. It's ok to be trendy but make sure you have some timeless pieces in there so that you can add and takeaway in the following years.

Oh my! Where were you able to find a skinny tree? I definitely worry that a wide tree this year will take up entirely too much room.

Here in Utah we have a store called TaiPan Trading and they sell them. They’re also in California and St. George, Utah. Mine was $75 so a total steal! I’d look at specialty decor stores or I know that Lowes or Home Depot would have them online. It’s such a space saver and I love the look of them so much more! Good luck!
