I live in a HOA Community and when we first moved here 8 years ago, I felt that I couldn't do much with the space I was allotted. We had our backyard that we did stamped concrete throughout because it's only a pad 12×18′. The small patch of actual digging space I have in the front is 2×6′.

The main things you want because of the small space or really any space is the right tools. I used this handheld hoe and removed any old flowers, sparse grass and weeds. You'll want to make sure and remove the entire root for effectiveness. If you pull it, you will most likely end up with the root still in the ground and just be right back where you were a few months prior. Get yourself some gloves, a sturdy shovel and some good soil while you're picking out your plants and it'll save you a lot of headache.

When I start planting, I start in a container and allow it to grow over the summer. By fall, they'll be sturdy enough to transfer and still make an impact the next year. I love Perennials all for this point. I live in Utah so I live in group 7 so each time I go to the flower market, I will make sure that it'll be suitable for Utah's crazy weather. I also look for ones that will be sustainable if I don't water them everyday. Watering flowers is my nemesis. I enjoy when it rains but April in Utah is a bit too early. Mothers Day weekend is always a perfect time to plant so that you won't have to worry about any frost.

Another essential is to stay hydrated! I always try to have my kids help me but it can be more time-consuming so I keep a bottle of water for me and some *NEW* Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars available at Walmart. They also have several other varieties that I enjoy. My most favorite are the Raspberry Fruit Bars.
